Q: What are Rootbarriers?
Root Barriers are plastic wall-like structures that are installed underground and are designed to prevent tree roots from causing damage to streets, sidewalks, foundations and other hardscapes.
Root Barriers are made to encourage the tree roots to grow downward instead of horizontally and upward. The barriers can be used in a linear or surround installation and are available in a variety of lengths.
Q: What are Tree Guards?
Tree Guards are designed to protect tree trunks from damage from rodents, mowers and weed trimmers. The Century Tree Guard is manufactured with high density polyethylene which lasts longer and protects better. Our Tree Guards incorporate vents that allow proper ventilation and interlocking tabs that connect more than one Tree Guard for larger tree applications.
Q: How do Root Barriers work?
Root Barriers work by essentially acting like an underground wall that blocks tree roots from penetrating the nearby or surrounding hardscapes. When tree roots come in contact with the Root Barrier they are directed to grow downward thus preventing the roots from penetrating sidewalks, foundations, streets and other hardscape surfaces.
Q: Why should I use Root Barriers?
Protection and Prevention. Root Barriers can prevent and/or delay the damage that tree roots can cause to many kinds of hardscapes. By spending a small amount today you will save in the future. Root Barriers have saved many Counties, Cities and Businesses (both public and private) from lawsuits and financial stress by simply preventing tree roots from damaging building foundations and high traffic areas where people commute on a daily basis. Because they are underground and out of sight, Root Barriers have somewhat of a job that goes unrecognized. They are hard at work helping communities look great and hardscapes stay the way they where designed to look.
Q: Can I install Root Barriers myself or do I have to have a contractor put them in?
We get this one a lot. If you can dig a hole then you can install Root Barriers. Before you place the tree into the hole you will place the Root Barrier around the perimeter (for surround application) or you will place the Root Barrier into a trench (for linear applications) along the hardscape. The depth of the hole will determine which size Root Barrier you will need. Most small DIY jobs will not require heavy duty equipment. Just a shovel, wheel barrow and some sweat is all you need.
