Century Products began business in the late 1970s, when officials from the Counties of Orange and Los Angeles, California, contacted us for root pruning and root barrier installations.

It quickly became evident that the materials being used were not meeting the standards they were intended for. Hardscapes were being damaged just 18 to 24 months after installation, creating liability issues and trip-and-fall hazards in the same locations that had been “repaired” only a year or so prior. This resulted in millions of dollars spent on temporary fixes.

We began working closely with officials from Orange and Los Angeles Counties, as well as the U.S. Forestry Department, to research the issue. We discovered that in nearly 100% of installations, the root barriers were failing and causing significant damage to surrounding hardscapes. Upon recognizing these fundamental flaws, we deemed it unacceptable to continue using these inferior products.

It was at this point that Floyd T. Smith—an ISA Certified Arborist and Licensed Contractor—founded Century Products and began implementing critical changes. He redesigned the existing root barriers by introducing new specifications and using a more functional, durable, and cost-effective material: high-density polyethylene (HDPE). To manufacture root barrier rolls that met our high standards, we developed and patented a unique production process, giving rise to our advanced line of long-lasting root barrier rolls.

This innovation led to the creation of the only dual-purpose Root and Water Barrier on the market. All of our products are approved by government and federal agencies nationwide.
